Who we are

Next Train is operated by Evans Studios (“we”, “us”), the controller for the data described below. Contact: EvansAppStudio@gmail.com · also listed on the About page.

This is an unofficial app — not affiliated with any transport operator or authority we show times for.

Overview

Next Train shows live train departure times and leave-by times for journeys you save, across 33 regions in Australia, the UK, Sweden, Finland and Norway. We do not require an account. We aim to keep personal data on your device wherever possible.

Location

On Android, iOS, and in browsers that allow it, Near me may use your device location (precise or approximate) only on the device to pick the nearest station.

We do not upload GPS coordinates to our servers. We may send the station name (and direction) to our API to fetch live times.

You can deny location permission; Near me will not auto-detect, and you can still pick a station or use Journeys.

Data stored on your device

Web / WebView: preferences and journeys in localStorage (and similar browser storage).

Android app: additional preferences for features such as the home-screen widget and leave reminders (Android storage / SharedPreferences), including reminder settings you choose (for example target train time and remind days).

iOS app: additional preferences for the home-screen widget (shared App Group storage between the app and its widget extension), including which journey or nearby board the widget should show.

On Android, leave reminders are local notifications scheduled on your device. We do not send marketing push notifications from our servers.

This data stays on your device unless you clear app or site data, or use Clear all data in Menu.

Train times

Live data is relayed via our API (hosted with the website) from the relevant transport operator for your region — currently including Transperth, TfNSW, Transport for London and National Rail, Trafiklab, Digitransit, and Entur, among others. Requests include station and direction only — not your name or account (we do not have accounts).

Crash diagnostics

The Android and iOS apps use Sentry (a third-party crash-reporting processor, hosted in the United States) to help us find and fix bugs. When a crash or error happens, Sentry receives device and OS information, app version, session data, and a trail of recent app activity (breadcrumbs) leading up to it — which, because breadcrumbs record our own API requests, can include the station and direction you were viewing. We strip known sensitive fields (internal API keys, ad-unit IDs) before they reach Sentry, but we do not currently strip station names from these automatic breadcrumbs.

This data is not linked to your identity — there is no account to link it to — and there is no way to request deletion of a specific crash report, since we can’t tie one back to a person. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in keeping the app working.

Send feedback

Menu → Send feedback sends your note, and an email address if you choose to give one, to a third-party form service (Formspree) that forwards it to our support inbox. We use your email only to reply to your feedback, and never for marketing. This is optional — leave it blank and we can’t reply.

Advertising

Android and iOS: Google AdMob may show a banner in the free app.

Web: Google AdSense may show ads when configured and allowed.

Google may use cookies, advertising IDs, or similar technologies per their policies. We do not control Google’s advertising systems.

On Android and iOS, if you’re in the UK or EEA, we ask for your consent before requesting an ad at all, using Google’s consent management tool (UMP). If you don’t consent, no ad request is made and you see no ad slot — we never fall back to an unconsented ad. Where the consent tool determines it’s needed, you can change or withdraw that consent any time in Menu → Privacy options. Declining still gives you the full app.

Purchases (Remove ads)

Optional one-time “Remove ads” unlock (A$7.99) via Google Play Billing on Android.

We do not receive your card number or full payment details — Google Play handles payment.

Your purchase is checked with the store on your device. A local cache may remember ad-free status offline. Use Restore in Menu after reinstalling.

Hosting & logs

The website and API are hosted on a cloud provider (Vercel today). Standard server logs may include IP address, time, user agent, and request path/query (for example station and direction). Used for security and operations, not for building a personal profile in the app.

UK / EEA rights

If you’re in the UK or the European Economic Area, UK GDPR / EU GDPR gives you rights over data we hold about you: access, correction, deletion, and objection. Because we don’t have accounts, most of what we hold is on your own device — Clear all data in Menu removes it. For anything else (for example, a feedback email, or a Sentry crash report you believe identifies you), contact us at EvansAppStudio@gmail.com.

Our legal basis is legitimate interest for crash diagnostics and app operation, and — on Android and iOS — your consent (collected via Google’s consent tool, reopenable from Menu → Privacy options) for showing ads at all in the UK/EEA. You can withdraw ad consent at any time from that menu.

Some processing happens outside the UK/EEA: our hosting (Vercel) and crash-reporting processor (Sentry) are both US-based.

Children

Next Train is a general-audience utility. It is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes

We may update this policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of the app or site after an update means you accept the revised policy.
